Inexpensive Summer Fun with the Kids

All the fun we have today seems to be centered on money — that is, spending it. Take a cruise, visit Europe, or escape for a week on a trip across the country. There is nothing wrong with these activities, but you can also have fun with the family and still spend little or no money.

When we were young, we didn’t have a lot of money. But, we managed to take a family trip every year. It is amazing, but some years we go without a trip now because of the expense. This has forced us to find more inexpensive ways to have fun with our kids.

My children enjoy learning about animals. They used to only be interested in snakes, but now they will look at just about any animal. On weekends when there is nothing to do, we visit the local science center or the zoo. The zoo is relatively inexpensive and you can get season passes. The science center offers yearly memberships that entitle four family members to visit as many times as they want for free. Members also enjoy discounts in the gift shop.

Kids want to be outdoors with the sun in their face. As long as they can play and get some air they don’t always care what they do. If you have a fence or your neighbor has one, why not invest in a swimming pool.

You don’t have to get an in-ground pool. Quick set-up pools can be purchased for less than $300. They stay filled and covered during the winter so you don’t have to worry about draining them and turning the back yard into a swamp. The pool will pay for itself the first eighty degree week you encounter. Kids can relax and play in the pool anytime.

If you have a big back yard, set it up for some games. You and the kids can play volleyball, badminton, kickball, and dodge ball to name a few. These games are fun and get the blood flowing. Invite friends and family over for a cookout and make a day of it.

Many cities offer free or inexpensive activities downtown during the year. Parades take place during the summer along with carnivals, fairs, art exhibits, and cook-offs. Music festivals showcase local talent and have good foods and crafts. All of these ideas are inexpensive and close by. Kids get to explore new places in their own city and have a good time.

Rainy days are good for inexpensive family fun. Have a movie day or a pizza night where everyone gets to make their own pizza pie. Art is a good thing to do when it’s gloomy out. Turn the kitchen table into an art studio with watercolors, crayons, and craft supplies. Let all of the creations dry overnight and display them the next day.

Fun for the family can be inexpensive and close to home. Taking a trip is fun but more than once a year could break the bank. For more frequent fun, try these ideas.
