Want to save money on facials and other spa treatments

A day at the spa is a fun way to pamper your body and make your skin glow, but it can be an expensive proposition. The good news is you can create some of the same effects by just opening your cupboards or reaching into your vegetable crisper.

Homemade beauty remedies are nothing new and a lot of the same things that are good for the inside of your body are also great for your skin.

Of course, that also means that any food that you’re not supposed to eat shouldn’t be used on your skin either, because it will absorb into your body and could cause an allergic reaction. Even if you don’t think you have any allergies, it’s always best to test any new product (even homemade ones) on a small area of skin and wait 24 hours to see if you have any redness or irritation.

Oatmeal Face Scrub
1/2 cup ground oatmeal
1/2 cup ground corn meal
1/4 cup powdered milk
- Mix ingredients together and store in airtight container. To use, scoop out a small handful and mix with a few drops of water to make a paste. Use the paste to wash and exfoliate your face. Rinse with warm water.

Tropical Fruit Cleanser
1/4 cup mashed papaya
1 teaspoon plain yogurt
- Mix ingredients and blend to a smooth paste. Gently pat the mixture on to your neck and face. Leave for 10 to 15 minutes, then remove with warm water.

Herbal Face Steam
1 teaspoon dried parsley
1 teaspoon dried rosemary
1 teaspoon dried mint leaves
1 teaspoon dried marigold leaves
1 teaspoon dried chamomile flowers
6 cups boiling water
- First, cleanse your face of all makeup. Placeherbs in the bottom of a bowl and carefully add the rapidly boiling water. After testing very carefully that the steam is not too hot, make a tent over your head with a towel and steam your face for five minutes. Gently pat your face dry.
